Glurthang FAQ

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions are here to satisfy your hunger for knowledge. Please ask, if you can't find the question which is bothering your mind and an answer to it.

  • What kind of car it is?
  • Mercedes-Benz W114 230 1976. It is a hearse, if you haven't allready figured that out. ;) The model of the chassis W114 and the engine is M180. M180 is 2,3 litre inline six cylinder gasoline/petrol engine with two Zenith -carburators. Transmission is four speed manual with the gear shifter located on the steering column.

These W114 and 115 beauties were made 1968-1976. In Germany they are also known as '/8' because the model was introduced in 1968. W115 has a four or five cylinder engine and W114 has a six cylinder engine. Otherwise these two models (W114 and W115) are pretty much the same.
  • A hearse! Aren't you afraid of driving it?
  • Why should I be afraid while driving it? There is not a single deceased in the car and I think that generally you have to be more afraid of living than dead people.
  • Are you going to start a funeral home business of your own?
  • Certainly not! And the car can't be used as a funeral coach anymore. Finnish law requires devided and sealed compartment for the casket and the devider wall has been taken down from this hearse.
  • Does it make any sense to buy or have a hearse?
  • I think that if you have to ask this question, you wouldn't understand the answer even if I tried to explain.

It is still uncertain what should be done with this hearse. It won't be possible to restore it to its original condition because one of the previous owners has removed some casket things and taken down the divider between driving and rear compartments. I think this hearse will reborn as a mixture of some kind of "a (mild) hot rot of the end of the days" and "a camping car" (sweet dreams in the back of a hearse).
  • Why the head lamps aren't "vertical" even if the car is W114?
  • A German funeral coach and special bodies builder Rappold made "a facelift" to the car so it looks like the S-class model W116, which was of course the latest S-class model of the time. Actually only the head lights have been taken from W116. With new lamps and "a bit" of modification it looked bigger, newer and more expencive.

The grille and the hood are original. The front bumper is from an older w114 model (1968-1973), but is has been turned upside down to give it W116 look. The front fenders have been custom made from original to fit the new front of the car.
  • The car looks quite big in the photos? Is it really?
  • Well, it is a little bigger than a Nissan Micra. =) It has been built from long wheelbase commersial chassis (114.008). The wheelbase is 3,4 metres (normally 2,75 m) and the total length is 5,3 meters (normally 4,68 m). The height is 1,75 meters (normally 1,44m), the tare is 1655 kilograms and total mass is 2265 kilograms.
  • What the Gurthang means?
  • Maybe I should tell you more about the name Gurthang. =) I don't know how common it is to give names to cars or give names to cars based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth mythology, but that's where the name of the car comes.

Anglachel was made from a star fallen from the sky. Later on the Anglachel (Iron of the Flaming Star) was reforged as Gurthang, Iron of Death. So there is really nothing common with the car and the name. On the other hand they both are reforged and irons of death. =)
